Rainwater Collection – An Easy, Sustainable, Plant-Friendly Practice

Spring showers are bringing May flowers, which makes it the perfect time to use the Oatey® Mystic™ Rainwater Collection System to repurpose rainwater from gutters and downspouts. Whether redirecting rainwater into a collection barrel for reuse in lawn and garden watering, or redirecting rainwater directly into a nearby garden or flower bed, the Mystic™ is a simple system for diverting the maximum amount of rainwater for the use of your choice.

Rainwater Collection System

The Mystic™ system takes the guesswork out of collecting rainwater. It can be easily installed into a standard 2”x 3” residential downspout, and its unique built-in reservoir channels rainwater flow from the sides of the downspout, allowing debris such leaves and dirt to go down the center. The 4’ high-flow hose directs water to your desired destination, and the result is more collected rainwater without unwanted sediment. The system is built with durable, UV-resistant material that can be painted to match your downspout. When your collection container is full, simply disconnect the hose and insert red plug to stop the flow of water.

There are many appealing aspects of rainwater collection, which have helped the practice to grow in popularity over recent years. In addition to its cost-saving benefits, collecting and reusing rainwater for lawns and gardens minimizes the amount of water flowing into storm drains, sewer systems and local waterways. Millions of pounds of pesticides are applied to lawns each year, contaminating storm water runoff. These chemicals are a primary source of water pollution. Rainwater collection minimizes this runoff, reducing the flow of harmful pollutants into local waterways. Plus, rainwater is ideal for lawns and gardens, as plants and microbes prefer rainwater because it’s naturally “soft” and free of chlorine, fluoride and other chemicals.

With as efficient a system as Mystic™ in place, a significant amount of rainwater can be collected – up to thousands of gallons per month, depending on the rainfall in your area and the size of your roof. With such an environmentally friendly and sustainable option that’s easy to install and maintain, rainwater collection is a great addition to anyone’s home and garden routine.
