Frequently Asked Questions

What are the differences between virgin propylene glycol and reclaimed/recycled propylene glycol?

Virgin propylene glycol has never been used previously.  Some boiler manufacturers state in their warranties that antifreeze made with virgin propylene glycol is required or the warranty is voided.   Recycled propylene glycol is captured and cleaned after use (mainly for de-icing aircraft). It is then considered a lower grade of propylene glycol and may still contain other ingredients even after cleaning.   Hercules Cryo-Tek antifreeze is made only with virgin propylene glycol.

Are there specific products for aluminum boiler systems?

Yes.  Use Cryo-Tek 100AL antifreeze for boilers with aluminum heat exchangers. Sludgehammer Universal Corrosion Inhibitor and Sludgehammer System Restorer & Noise Reducer is compatible with all metal heat exchangers, including aluminum.

What is the warranty on the pump that comes with the Haymaker Kit?

The pump has a one year warranty from date of purchase.

Should I dilute Cryo-Tek antifreeze?

The answer depends on which Cryo-Tek antifreeze is being used, and what level of freeze protection is required. For more information, see this chart. Freeze point:  The temperature at which crystals begin to form. Pumpable:  The temperature at which there are sufficient crystals to impede the flow of the product. Burst protection:  The temperature at which pipes burst.  

Is Cryo-Tek toxic?

Any chemical has a certain amount of toxicity, but Hercules Cryo-Tek anti-freezes are very low. This is the statement listed on the MSDS sheets that are posted on our website that can be viewed or downloaded. Emergency and First Aid Procedures: EYE AND SKIN CONTACT: Like with all foreign material, flushing and washing with water is good safety and hygienic practice. INGESTION: Low in toxicity; induce vomiting if large amounts are ingested.

How do I dispose of Cryo-Tek?

The following information is copied from our MSDS sheets posted on our website along with all our product submittal sheets.  Steps To Be Taken In Case Material Is Released Or Spilled: Cover with absorbent material; let soak and sweep up. Waste Disposal Method: Incinerate or bury (landfill) away from water supplies in accordance with local regulations. Precautions To Be Taken In Handling And Storing: None Other Precautions: None Remember to never dump the antifreeze products into the sewer systems.

What do Cryo-Tek test strips measure?

Each strip has two pads.  One pad measures the level of propylene glycol, the other measures the level of corrosion inhibitor.  These levels should be checked as part of routine boiler maintenance.
