Why Choose Oatey Gaskets and Bolts for Toilet Installation?

Oatey's family of brands, including Oatey, Hercules and Harvey, has set the benchmark for excellence in toilet-setting products, trusted by generations of professional plumbers. Our wax ring gaskets and bolts are engineered to solve common installation challenges while providing superior sealing performance.

Key benefits of Oatey toilet wax ring gaskets and bolts include:

  • Leak-proof sealing: Wax naturally seals to the porous porcelain texture of toilets, eliminating potential leak paths
  • Temperature resistance: Designed to withstand a wide range of temperatures, maintaining integrity in challenging conditions
  • Easy installation: Clean release trays provide no-mess handling, even on hot, humid days
  • Professional reliability: Trusted by professional plumbers for both new installations and repairs
  • Long-lasting performance: Premium materials ensure durable, watertight seals that last for years

What Types of Toilet Gaskets Does Oatey Offer?

Wax Ring Gaskets: The Gold Standard for Toilet Sealing

Oatey wax ring gaskets create a seamless, airtight seal between the toilet and the floor flange. Wax's natural ability to conform to porous porcelain makes it a superior choice for ensuring a secure, leak-proof installation.

Oatey wax ring options include:

  • Standard wax rings: Ideal for most toilet installations with standard flange heights
  • Jumbo wax rings: Extra-thick design for installations requiring additional sealing material
  • Wax rings with polyethylene funnels: Provide directional flow and added protection
  • Hercules Johni-Rings®: Premium wax rings with reinforced construction for heavy-duty applications

What Makes Oatey Wax Rings Better Than Competitors?

Oatey's brands of wax rings are engineered with premium materials and innovative features that set them apart:

  1. Consistent quality: Rigorous manufacturing standards ensure every ring performs reliably
  2. Professional endorsement: Trusted by professional plumbers for generations
  3. Complete product line: Options for every installation scenario, from standard to challenging applications
  4. Clean release technology: Select products include special tray design that prevents mess during handling and installation

When Should You Use a Jumbo Wax Ring vs. Standard Wax Ring?

Use a jumbo or extra-thick wax ring when:

  • The distance between the toilet bowl and toilet flange is greater than standard
  • The floor flange sits below the finished floor level
  • You're installing a toilet on an uneven surface
  • Previous installations have failed due to insufficient sealing material

Use a standard wax ring when:

  • The toilet flange is at or slightly above floor level
  • You're performing a standard replacement installation
  • The floor is level and the toilet sits flush

Important: Oatey does not recommend stacking two wax seals on top of each other. Instead, use a jumbo or extra-thick wax ring, or consider raising the flange height with one of our spacer kits.

How Do You Install Oatey Wax Ring Gaskets and Closet Bolts?

Step-by-Step Wax Ring Installation

Before installing the wax seal:

  1. Turn off the water supply tube and drain the toilet.
  2. Disconnect the water supply and remove the toilet.
  3. Remove the old wax ring and inspect the flange.

During installation:

  1. Install the new wax seal. (Center the new wax ring directly on the flange, then follow the instructions provided with the product.)
  2. Reset the toilet and install closet bolts.
  3. Turn the water back on and test.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do I need to replace a wax ring?

You may need to replace a toilet wax ring if you notice water leaking or pooling around the base of the toilet, persistent sewer or sewage odors, or visible floor damage near the toilet. Other signs include a toilet that rocks or feels loose, or water stains on the ceiling below the bathroom. These symptoms often indicate a failed wax seal, which can lead to leaks, subfloor damage, and potential mold if not addressed promptly.

Do I need a wax ring with a funnel or without?

Wax rings with polyethylene funnels (also called horns or sleeves) provide directional flow into the drain and can offer added protection against leaks. They're particularly useful when the toilet flange is recessed below the floor level. Standard wax rings without funnels work well for most installations where the flange is at or above floor level. Wax rings with a funnel also help with proper alignment over the closet flange, giving the installer peace of mind that the install is correct.

What's the difference between Oatey, Hercules, and Harvey wax rings?

Oatey, Hercules and Harvey wax rings all deliver a reliable, watertight seal and meet Oatey’s quality standards. The difference comes down to features, configuration and brand preference, with options like reinforced rings, horn styles and varying wax thicknesses to match different installation needs.

How long do Oatey wax ring gaskets last?

When properly installed, Oatey wax ring gaskets can last for decades without needing replacement. The wax material does not degrade over time and maintains its sealing properties indefinitely under normal use conditions. Replacement is typically only needed when removing and reinstalling a toilet.

Can Liquilock be used in fish tanks?

Liquilock is not recommended for use in fish tanks. The crystals will cling to the glass, plastic corners, or seams and are difficult to rinse out of the tank completely. If these crystals remain in the tank and consumed by the fish, the fish will most likely perish.

Are there other uses for the Liquilock product?

You can use Liquilock when replacing an old water heater. Liquilock will work great to encapsulate the sludge and remaining water in the bottom of the tank after it is drained. Once you have drained the old tank and are ready to carry it out of the home, close the water heater drain or plug the drain hole. Pour 3 packages of Liquilock into the tank through the hot water inlet side (no dip tube) and after five minutes you can remove the tank from the home without splashing and spilling.

How do you determine how much Liquilock to use when working on a toilet?

1 package of Liquilock will work for a 1.6 gallon toilet and 2 packages will be necessary for a 3.5 gallon toilet. Remember to shut the water off and flush the toilet before adding the Liquilock to the water in the toilet bowl.

Can you use Liquilock for other fluids besides water?

No. Liquilock is only approved for use on plumbing fixtures supplied with potable water.

How long can you leave Liquilock in the toilet before it will dry out?

Liquilock can be left in a toilet for up to 1 week (5days) without any issues. If you plan on storing the toilet for longer periods of time or if it is extremely hot and dry where the toilet will be stored, wrap the toilet in a 55 gallon trash bag to keep the Liquilock from crusting over.

Is Liquilock safe to use if you have a septic system?

Yes. Liquilock is biodegradable.
