Pans & Stands

< Back to Products

Water heater pans and stands are protective plumbing accessories that prevent water damage and ensure code compliance. Oatey provides a comprehensive range of protective pans and stands engineered to safeguard walls, flooring, subfloor, and, if your water heater is on an upper level, the ceiling and walls below and utility spaces from water damage. Our product line includes aluminum pans for gas water heaters, plastic pans for electric water heaters, washing machine pans for laundry rooms, and water heater stands that meet Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) and local building code requirements.

Drainage pans catch leaks, drips and discharged water from water heaters and washing machines. Oatey offers aluminum and plastic water heater pans in sizes ranging from 18 in. to 32 in. diameter. Plastic washing machine pans measure 28 x 30 in.

Water Heater stands elevate water heater tanks 18 inches above the ground to meet National Fuel Gas Code (NFPA 54) requirements. Oatey offers heavy-duty 18-gauge galvanized steel stands for water heaters up to 50 gallon capacity.

Why Do You Need Water Heater Pans and Stands?

Water heater pans protect your home from costly water damage by containing leaks and directing water to drain lines. A single water heater leak can cause thousands of dollars in damage to flooring, subfloors, and personal property and, if your water heater is on an upper level, the ceiling and walls below. Drainage pans for water heater and washing machines provide early leak detection, floor protection, and code compliance for installations in attics, upper floors, or above finished living spaces.

Water heater stands elevate gas water heater tanks 18 inches above the ground to comply with the National Fuel Gas Code (NFPA 54). This elevation is required for gas water heaters installed in garages and other areas where flammable vapors from spills may accumulate near the floor. The 18 in. height raises the ignition source above the level where gasoline vapors and other flammable gases typically settle, providing essential safety protection.

Key Benefits:

  • Leak containment: 2-½ in. to 3 in. deep drainage pans hold water from minor leaks, drips and water discharge
  • Floor protection: Prevents water damage to subflooring and surrounding areas
  • Early detection: Visible water in the pan alerts you to problems before major damage occurs
  • Multiple drain adapter options: Pans include 1 in./1-1/2 in. PVC and 1 in. CPVC drain fittings for flexible installation
  • Fire protection: Stands safeguard gas water heaters with an ignition source from potentially flammable vapors due to spills inside of garages.
  • Flood protection: Stands elevate water heaters above potential ground-level flooding
  • Code compliance: Meets relevant Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC), IPC, IRC, IMC, NSPC, National Fuel Gas Code (N), and local building code requirements

What Types of Water Heater Pans Does Oatey Offer?

Oatey manufactures aluminum pans for gas water heaters, plastic pans for electric water heaters, and plastic washing machine pans for laundry applications. Each pan type is engineered for specific use cases and code requirements.

Aluminum vs. Plastic Water Heater Pans

Aluminum pans are required for gas water heater installations and approved for electric water heaters. Plastic pans are approved for electric water heater installations only and cannot be used with gas water heaters due to fire safety and temperature resistance requirements.

Washing Machine Pans

Washing machine pans protect laundry room floors from leaks, overflows, and hose failures. These durable plastic pans are specifically designed to fit under washing machines and contain water until it drains safely, protecting floors and surrounding areas from water damage.

Water Heater Stands

Oatey's water heater stands are constructed from 18-gauge spangled galvanized steel delivering a stable base that prevents tipping. These stands elevate water heater tanks 18 inches above the ground in compliance with the National Fuel Gas Code (NFPA 54). Raising the unit also reduces risk from flooding and prevents moisture damage to the base from concrete and dirt floors— providing a stable, corrosion-resistant platform for residential and commercial installations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a water heater pan?

Water heater pan requirements vary by location, but most building codes require pans for water heaters installed in attics, upper floors, or above finished living spaces. Even when not required by code, water heater pans are highly recommended to protect against water damage from leaks, condensation, or tank failures.

What size water heater pan do I need?

Most building codes require the water heater pan measure at least 2 inches larger than the diameter of the water heater. Be sure the T&P (temperature & pressure) relief valve is within the diameter of the pan.

How do I connect to a drain?

Water heater pans can be plumbed to a drain using the provided connector. Your local building code may specify the type of fitting. Oatey water heater pans include either a PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) or CPVC (chlorinated polyvinyl chloride) adapter. PVC drain adapters fit over 1-inch and inside of 1-1/2-inch PVC pipe. CPVC adapters fit 1-inch CPVC pipe.

Why do some aluminum pans come without a pre-punched hole?

Aluminum water heater pans without pre-punched holes give the installer maximum flexibility to determine the exact hole size and best location on the side or the bottom to fit the available drain pipe. In some cases, a pan is intended only to contain a small amount of water or to have an alarm installed, rather than to be hooked up to a continuous drain line.

Which water heater pan should be used when installing a water heater?

The aluminum pan must be used for gas water heater installations. The plastic pan is not approved for gas water heater installations due to fire safety and temperature requirements. Both plastic and aluminum pans are approved for electric water heater installations.

What is the maximum temperature that plastic water heater pans can be exposed to before the integrity of the pan is affected?

The Vicat softening temperature is 180°F

What are the measurements for the Washing Machine Pans?

Outside diameter   29¾” x 31¾” Inside diameter   27-11/32” x 29-11/32” Depth   2-19/32”

Does Oatey offer a washing machine pan without the ribs on the inside bottom?

Yes. The #34169 – 28”x30” pan does not have ribs.

Can the existing holes in the pans be plugged by the end user?

No. It is very unlikely that you would be able to create a watertight patch, and this would void any manufactures warranties. If you need a pan without holes for your application, we offer several pans for you to choose from: 22” Plastic Pans #34066 do not have holes stamped into them. Aluminum Pans are available without holes in all sizes.

What is the thickness of the aluminum water heater pans?

28 gauge or .032”
