How to Replace or Install a Preformed Shower Drain

Difficulty intermediate intermediate Difficulty Level
Time < 2 hours Under 2 Hours

Oatey No-Caulk Shower Drains are designed with a drain body that seals to the shower base with washers. For use with preformed shower bases, these drains come with a universal snap-in strainer in a variety of finishes that complement your bathroom's existing décor.

Note, this guide is for no-caulk pre-formed shower drains ONLY.

Before you start, check out 7 Things To Know Before Installing A No-Caulk Shower Drain to help make your shower drain installation a success.

Step 1: Install No-Caulk Barrel Flange to Shower Base Step 2: Install Shower Base Into Final Location Step 3: Install Rubber Gasket by Screwing Into Place Step 4: Install Drain Cover Document Downloads

What You'll Need For This Project

  • Oatey Plumber’s Putty
  • Preformed No-Caulk Shower Base
  • Snap-in Drain Cover
  • Adjustable Pliers
  • Screwdriver

1. Step 1: Install No-Caulk Barrel Flange to Shower Base

Apply a ½ in. bead of Oatey Plumber’s Putty around the underside of the no-caulk barrel flange.

Note: ABS shower drains should only use silicone, NOT putty

Then, place the no-caulk barrel through the top side of the shower base hole. Compress down as far as you can without twisting the drain.

Next, place the rubber sealing washer and friction washer over the barrel to the underside of the shower base.

Tighten the locking ring using adjustable pliers. Once fully tightened, remove any excess plumber‘s putty from the top of the drain.

2. Step 2: Install Shower Base Into Final Location

Carefully set the shower base into the shower footprint.

3. Step 3: Install Rubber Gasket by Screwing Into Place

Place the rubber pipe gasket, bevel side up, over the drainpipe coming up through the no-caulk barrel. Push down on the rubber pipe gasket until it sets at the bottom of the no-caulk barrel.

Next, thread the gasket set screw into place over the drainpipe with the provided wrench and tighten with a screwdriver.

4. Step 4: Install Drain Cover

Lastly, simply snap in your drain cover to complete the installation.
