How to Install a Supply Box

Difficulty intermediate intermediate Difficulty Level
Time < 2 hours Under 2 Hours

Installing a supply box is fundamental to ensuring a reliable water or gas supply for your fixtures. In this tutorial, we’ll break down the installation process, providing clear instructions and helpful tips along the way. From choosing your supply box location to testing for leaks, we’ll walk you through each step for a successful installation!

Choose the location. Measure and mark the height. Prep the supply box. Align and secure the box. Connect the drainpipe (skip this step for gas or valve only MODA boxes). Solvent weld the P-Trap (skip this step for gas or valve only MODA boxes). Secure the water or gas lines. Test for leaks. Connect the appliance or fixture.

What You'll Need For This Project

  • Tape Measure
  • Pencil
  • Oatey MODA Gas Supply Box or Oatey MODA Lavatory Supply Boxes
  • Power Drill
  • Screws

For Gas MODA Boxes

  • Hercules MEGA BUBBLE

For Standard and Fire-Rated MODA Boxes

  • Oatey Purple Primer
  • Oatey Heavy Duty Clear PVC Cement
  • Drain Pipe
  • P-Trap Kit

For additional supply box kits, such as an ice maker outlet box, a washing machine water supply box, and more, you can view all Oatey MODA and supply box products here.

1. Choose the location.

First, you need to determine the ideal spot for your supply box. Ensure it is easily accessible and close to the fixture. Check with fixture manufacturer for recommended supply box location.

2. Measure and mark the height.

Grab a tape measure and use a pencil to mark the ideal height for your supply box on the stud. Typically, a washing machine supply box is around 36-42 inches from the finished floor to the bottom of the box.

3. Prep the supply box.

If you are using a fire-rated MODA box, slide the large metal bracket onto the side of the box that will be attached to the stud. Then, insert the L-Bracket through the slots at the top of the box, positioned at an upward-facing right angle.

For non fire-rated MODA Boxes, install plastic brackets on the side of the box for mounting.

Note: If you use multiple MODA boxes, they can be clipped together.

4. Align and secure the box.

Carefully align the supply box with the marked measurement on the stud. Utilize the screws  to firmly secure the box to the stud, ensuring its stability.

Tip: To ensure stable installment, thoroughly check the tightness of all screws and confirm there's no looseness in any part of the supply box.

5. Connect the drainpipe (skip this step for gas or valve only MODA boxes).

For standard and fire-rated MODA boxes, apply Oatey Purple Primer and then Oatey Heavy Duty Clear PVC Cement to secure the drain pipe to the box hub.

6. Solvent weld the P-Trap (skip this step for gas or valve only MODA boxes).

For standard and fire-rated MODA boxes, solvent weld the P-Trap to the drainpipe, ensuring a tight seal.

Note: To learn how to solvent weld, check out our short tutorial here.

7. Secure the water or gas lines.

Carefully secure the water or gas lines into the respective valves on the supply box, confirming a tight connection.

8. Test for leaks.

Before progressing to drywall installation, performing a leak check is crucial. For standard and fire-rated MODA boxes, turn on the water supply and meticulously inspect all connections for any signs of leakage. For gas MODA boxes, use Hercules MEGA BUBBLE to detect potential leaks effectively. Tighten up any loose connections.

9. Connect the appliance or fixture.

For standard and fire-rated MODA boxes, connect the water supply and drain hose from the appliance or fixture to the supply box valves. Once all connections are snuggly tightened, test run or cycle the appliance and vigilantly check for leaks.

For gas MODA boxes, connect the gas supply line from the appliance or fixture to the supply box valves. Once all connections are securely tightened, test the gas appliance for proper functionality and vigilantly check for leaks. Ensure all safety precautions and regulations when working with gas connections.

If everything runs smoothly and you don’t notice any leaks, you have successfully installed your supply box!
